Climate protection is the central concern of Project Groundswell. FOTOHOF has joined forces with three other European institutions dedicated to artistic photography and invited European artists to engage with the global challenge of climate change through an open call. At a time when awareness of environmental issues is higher than ever, this contemporary photography exhibition aims to take the next step: translating awareness into concrete action through the expressive power of photography.
Funded by the European Commission, the project brings together four international cultural institutions: Cortona On The Move (Italy), FOTOHOF (Austria), Imago Lisboa (Portugal), and Photo Museum Ireland (Ireland). Through a shared program of climate-action workshops, exhibitions, publications, and audiovisual content, the public is confronted with pressing questions of sustainability.
An international jury–composed of members from all four institutions–selected 12 photographic and film-based positions addressing climate change and climate protection from 400 submissions. The photographic projects by Gonçalo Fonseca (Portugal), Yvette Monahan (Ireland), Ingmar Björn Nolting (Germany), and Maria Oliveira (Portugal) will be exhibited at all four institutions, accompanied by a film program featuring eight additional photographic artists from Europe: Oliver Ressler (Austria), Nora Schwarz (Germany), Marco Buratti (Italy), Camilla Marrese & Gabriele Chiapparini (Italy), Matjaž Krivic (Slovenia), Sean Charlton White (Switzerland/Netherlands), Chloé Azzopardi (France), and Adam Sébire (Australia/Norway).
The exhibitions will open in February 2026 at FOTOHOF in Salzburg, followed by presentations at the Photo Museum in Dublin, at the Cortona On The Move festival in Tuscany in July, and in the autumn at Imago Lisboa.
