This workshop with trained educator and photographer Helena Kalleitner offers a comprehensive introduction to photography, teaching basic knowledge, tools, and creative strategies. Starting with a brief journey through the history of photography and moving on to image composition, the workshop also addresses the (critical) viewing and interpretation of images. Through practical exercises with cameras and smartphones, inspired by examples from art and pop culture as well as a variety of methodological approaches, participants are encouraged to develop a reflective and empowering approach to images.

This popular basic course teaches the most important aspects of photographic image composition and basic technical knowledge of digital photography. The focus is on training your personal eye through your own photo exercises and getting to know your camera, its functions, and settings. Using selected examples from famous photographers in the photographic art scene, we teach important basic knowledge about image composition. Portraits (individual portraits, two or more people, groups of people) are the focus of the joint photography exercises. Participants also take photos with their cameras on topics such as light and shadow, perspective, image cropping, foreground/background, and movement. The photos are then analyzed, evaluated, and printed out together. Indoor and outdoor shots teach technical and creative basics. Basic knowledge of image management and image editing with software tips round off this basic course.
