The exhibition »Time and Again« brings together four autobiographical narratives shaped by political decisions, social power relations, and historical upheavals. Research takes the photographers back to places of memory; they document traces left behind by violence, oppression, and social injustice. This creates media spaces that tell more than just personal stories. They address the consequences of exercised power and systemic violence and how they are inscribed in private life. In »Motherland hears, Motherland knows«, Dasha Karetnikova travels with her father to the cities and places in Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Russia where he lived and worked after his birth in a Russian gulag. In »Mein ferner Osten« (My Far East), Fungi Phuong Tran Minh explores her childhood as the daughter of Vietnamese contract workers in the former GDR, combining photographs with texts about her experiences of exclusion and racism. In search of truth and justice, Eugenia Maximova reconstructs the circumstances surrounding the murder of her sister-in-law, a Bulgarian journalist critical of the government, in »Silent River«. In the video work »Why being quiet is so loud«,‚ Nastassja Nefjodov shows the effects of trauma on personal relationships, focusing on her partner, who is burdened by his experiences in the Croatian War.

Curated by Agnes Matthias (Deutsche Fotothek, Dresden) and Karen Weinert (bautzner69/publish&print, Dresden).
The exhibition explores the question of how photography is made visible in the medium itself. The exhibits cover around 100 years of the pre-digital era in the form of an installation. The selection is based on a thematic review of the Deutsche Fotothek's collection of around 7 million photographs. On display are the photographic situation and practice, technology and materials, as well as studios and display cases as places of production and distribution. Photographers often sought out these subjects deliberately, reflecting on their own work, while sometimes they became the subject of the image unintentionally.
